With students back in local schools this week, the Municipality of Lakeshore is reminding everyone that community safety is a shared responsibility.
“Back-to-school is a fresh start for local students and a new start for many of Lakeshore’s youngest, so let’s make sure our communities are as safe as possible as they start this next chapter,” said Mayor Tracey Bailey. “We’re asking everyone to be extra cautious. Take your time and be mindful when driving in school zones, follow directions from our dedicated crossing guards, and make sure to talk about back-to-school safety with your children and loved ones.”
Driver should:
- Always stop and never pass a school bus when its upper alternating red lights are flashing, regardless of whether you are behind the bus or approaching it from the front.
- Reduce your speed and always keep a safe distance behind school buses as they make frequent stops.
- Always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and school crossings and always obey crossing guards.
Pedestrians should:
- Follow directions from crossing guards. At locations without designated crossing guards, make eye contact with drivers of approaching vehicles before crossing.
- Pay attention to your surroundings and remove earbuds and other devices while walking along roadways.
