Shared on behalf of Mayor Tracey Bailey
Yesterday, the Government of Ontario announced its plan to expand Strong Mayor powers to 169 municipalities throughout the province, including the Municipality of Lakeshore, effective May 1, 2025.
While the legislation aims to reduce obstacles and streamline governance towards the achievement of provincial priorities, it also erodes the voices of ward representatives and local democracy as a whole.
Council members aren’t obstacles to be overcome, they are a critical part of governance. They bring their own unique experiences, along with the voices of their constituents and communities, to the table every day.
Throughout this term, we have been called to take decisive action on priority issues, such as housing. When we have taken these actions, we have done so quickly, together and after thoughtful deliberations. I am always thankful for the input of my fellow Council members, even when we disagree.
Strong Mayor powers won’t change how I work with my colleagues around the Council table, or the dedicated staff members of Team Lakeshore. Democracy, especially at the local level, is a team effort that calls us not to override or overrule, but to work together.
Regardless of these powers, I will continue to foster and work with a team that is solely focused on improving the communities of Lakeshore for the benefit of our residents.
Together we are Lakeshore.
