Homeowners in Lakeshore now have access to optional service plans to assist with the cost and management of common plumbing repairs thanks to a new, voluntary program for residents, endorsed by Lakeshore Council earlier this year. The service plans provide protection for the water and sewer service lines that connect a resident’s home to Lakeshore’s system.
The 2023 “State of the Canadian Home” survey found that 50% of Canadian homeowners are unaware that they are financially responsible for needed repairs or replacement to the water and sewer lines on their property. These repairs are not typically covered under standard homeowner’s insurance or by the Municipality of Lakeshore.
“We are thrilled to endorse this service as a cost-effective way to support homeowners in protecting their properties. As a Council, we have made significant progress on our Flood Mitigation and Protection Framework, and this program complements those investments very well,” said Mayor Tracey Bailey. “We want to ensure that residents understand their responsibility to maintain and repair their service lines before they’re hit with a costly repair. The program’s educational aspect will help our residents prepare themselves and doesn’t cost the Municipality of Lakeshore anything.”
The no-deductible, low-cost service plans, available through Service Line Warranties of Canada (SLWC), ensure homeowners do not have to pay hundreds or even thousands out-of-pocket for a repair. This is especially important since the “State of the Canadian Home” survey found that nearly one-quarter of Canadians have $500 or less or nothing set aside for an emergency. The plans give Lakeshore homeowners reliable access to licensed and insured contractors who can quickly and professionally complete needed repairs on service lines.
Homeowners will soon receive information in the mail about the program and available service plans. There is no obligation to sign up for a plan – participation in the program is voluntary. The mailings are administered by SLWC but include Lakeshore’s logo to indicate that the mailing is legitimate and that the program was endorsed by Council.
The program is provided at no cost to the Municipality of Lakeshore and no public funds are used to promote or administer it.
“A SLWC service plan is a smart way for homeowners to prepare for a home emergency. These plans take the worry, inconvenience, and financial burden out of the repair,” said Mike Van Horne, General Manager, Service Line Warranties of Canada. “Lakeshore homeowners with a plan can call for service 24/7, and they get peace of mind that they won’t be financially responsible for a covered home repair emergency.”
Homeowners in over 70 Ontario municipalities now have access to SLWC service repair plans. Since the SLWC program began in 2014, homeowners have saved more than $8 million in repair expenses.
