Dog Tag Registration

Lakeshore's Dog Tag program has been discontinued. Dog owners are no longer required to purchase a dog tag every year. Read the full Report to Council online.

Dog owners are still required to ensure their dog is identifiable through a dog tag or microchip.

Commercially sold dog tags can be purchased at any pet store or online and must contain the dog’s name and a contact number. Additional information on the tag, such as owner's address, is also helpful in case the dog is found. Microchips are available through your veterinarian or the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.

    • When vouchers are picked up, applicants must provide proof of residency.
    • Please call ahead to 519-728-2700 to ensure voucher availability.

Lost Dogs

If you find a lost dog contact the Municipality of Lakeshore Animal Control Services dial 519-728-5010.

The Animal Control Officer answers calls 7 days a week.

The Dog Pound is jointly funded by the municipalities of Lakeshore, LaSalle, Tecumseh and Essex.  The goal of the Joint Dog Pound is reflected by our commitment "to maintain animal control in the County through the promotion of responsible pet ownership."
Lakeshore Dog Pound serves the Municipalities of:

  • Lakeshore,
  • LaSalle,
  • Tecumseh and
  • Essex.

Each municipality is responsible for their own animal control.

Contact the Pound at  519-727-6495 if you have lost a dog.

Occasionally we receive dogs from outside the above listed area, such as Chatham Kent.

The address for the Pound is 914 Puce Road accessible via 401 Puce Road exit.

When a stray dog is brought to the pound by the Animal Control Officer, or is received from the public, every attempt is made to locate its owner.  The animal is thoroughly checked for any identifying dog tag or tattoo and scanned for a microchip.  The pound keepers make every attempt possible to locate the owner of the dog.  Once a seventy-two hour period has lapsed the dog may then be moved to St. Clair College for assessment care and possible adoption. The Dog Pound Committee recognizes the contribution of the St. Clair College Veterinary Program for their assistance and support.

During the months of June, July and August while the students at the college are on vacation,  please contact the Windsor Essex County Humane Society.

There are fines that must be paid by the dog owner before the dog can be released.

Owners must also purchase an up to date dog tag before picking up their dog.

Hours of Operation at the Pound:

  • Monday-Friday 12:00 Noon - 4:30 P.M..
  • Saturday & Sunday 10:00 A.M. -  3:00 P.M.
